I Went From Riches To Rags Because I Overspent And Lost All My Savings

I never imagined that all the wealth in my bank, which used to be more than enough for my needs and expenses, would completely run out—and even go into minus.   I was forced to live with just the bare minimum, often borrowing money from friends or family to get by. It all started with my bad spending habits over the past few years.  I used to have a great job with an excellent salary. Back then, I was living a carefree life, spending on expensive things in cash every month without a care in the world. I bought branded clothes, gadgets, went on vacations, and spent lavishly on food.   At the beginning, my shopping habits seemed fine. My salary was high enough to cover everything, so I didn’t see any problem.   However, over time, I started spending more recklessly. I began borrowing money to buy things I didn’t really need. Little by little, my debts piled up and drained my savings until I had nothing left. The situation became disastrous when I was suddenly terminated from my job one day without advance notice. With no income to rely on, I realised I had a mountain of debt I had earlier thought I could pay back. But as I had no job and needed to find a new one it was a shock for me. I had to borrow money from family and friends just to meet my daily needs. It was a huge wake-up call for me. I felt ashamed and deeply disappointed in myself for letting things get this bad. My life completely went down the gutter because of my careless spending habits.  These days, I’ve been trying to turn my life around. I have started watching budgeting tips online, which gave me practical tips on managing my finances better. I also cut back on unnecessary expenses and am following a simple rule: prioritise needs over wants.  Thankfully, I recently found a new job that helps cover my daily expenses. Although I still have much debt to pay back, it’s a relief to finally have a steady income again, and I no longer have to borrow money from others. This has been a big step forward for me.  I’ve also started thinking long-term by investing to build up my savings for the future. The experience of having no savings at all was tough, and I never want to go through that again. Knowing how hard it is to live without financial security, I’ve become much more mindful of my spending and saving habits.  This article is part of TSS Confessions, a weekly column where we delve into personal finance topics that are unscripted and genuine real accounts from people.
